Gems of Contemporary Catalan Architecture
Presentation
Authored by the prestigious architect Joan Busquets, this latest volume in the series “Gems of Catalan Art” offers a comprehensive analysis and description of the most prominent buildings and urban sectors of Catalan architecture, from the 1930s to the present day.
The contributions of GATCPAC, Grup R, and the Escola de Barcelona, the major urban redevelopments, the urban project of Olympic Barcelona, and more recent ones like 22@, have had a strong social impact and have been stylistically very innovative, to the extent that Catalan architecture and its architects are appreciated and recognized worldwide with an label of uniqueness and maturity, and Barcelona has become a leader among major cities. The latest example of this recognition was the awarding of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2017 to the architects of the RCR group from Olot.
Catalan contemporary architecture, as a whole, exhibits a splendor comparable to Modernist architecture, but with an even more diverse spectacularity and with solutions aimed at society as a whole, whereas Modernism only addressed the demands of the dominant classes of the time. Its main characteristics are the reinterpretation of a certain constructive tradition, the willingness to share international innovations, and, above all, the capacity to understand architecture as part of the city, which leads to designing urban spaces beyond the limits of the project or the object itself.
