Presentation

This volume in the ‘Catalan Posters’ collection is dedicated to posters from the world of art and culture, primarily literature and music. Together with the previous volume, dedicated to the entertainment world, it offers a comprehensive compilation of cultural posters from Catalonia.

The book features a representative selection of posters published from the last decade of the 19th century to the first of the 21st. The selection begins with a poster from the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition, created that same year, and concludes with one by Frederic Amat, produced in 2018.

The most prominent authors in Catalan plastic arts have participated in poster design. We find renowned artists, such as Ramon Casas, Antoni Clavé, Antoni Tàpies, or Joan Miró; illustrators, such as Cesc, Lola Anglada, or Joan Junceda; and poets, such as Joan Brossa.

Regarding activities, they are enormously diverse: sculpture exhibitions, painting competitions, book promotions, magazine and book covers, music and poetry festivals, exhibition promotions, etc.

Most are preserved in institutions such as the National Library of Catalonia, the Historical Archive of the City of Barcelona, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Library of the Pavilion of the Republic, the Design Museum, etc. The selection is complemented by posters preserved in private archives, such as the Rovira Collection and the Marc Martí Collection.

More than a century of posters reveals their importance as a propaganda tool, but it is important to remember that they go beyond merely announcing events. They are the testimonial expression of different eras, both from an artistic and social point of view.
