Book characteristics
Catalan Jewelry and Goldsmithing, 1852-1939 is a study that explains the process by which the ancient guild activity of Catalan jewelry and goldsmithing became a modern activity, both from an industrial and artistic point of view, achieving the same consideration as fine arts.
The author is Dr. Pilar Vélez, director of the Design Museum of Barcelona. With over twenty published books, she is one of the leading specialists in Catalan jewelry and goldsmithing.
In this process, which spans Modernism, Noucentisme, Déco modernity, and the Avant-garde, several prominent names stood out, most notably Lluís Masriera.
Characteristics of Masriera jewels
The jewels in this project are part of a unique Masriera series, limited and numbered, of 200 pieces and are accompanied by the corresponding Masriera certificate. The identification number, laser-engraved on the jewel, corroborates its authenticity. The buyer of The Art of Catalan Jewelry will be able to choose which of the following pieces they desire:
- Earrings in 18-carat gold with amethysts, diamonds, and plique-à-jour fire enamel. They synthetically represent the Masriera floral universe.
- Ring in 18-carat gold with a diamond, amethyst, and fire enamel. It synthetically represents the Masriera floral universe.
- 18-carat gold pendant brooch with diamonds, amethyst, fire enamel, and a pearl. It depicts a female figure caressing a flower. The enamels have been applied using techniques such as plique-à-jour, which gives the jewel a genuine stained-glass effect, and basse-taille, which, with a velvety finish, creates transparency effects on the gold.
All jewels are accompanied by the characteristic Masriera certificate, which authenticates them. It includes a photograph of the piece and the identification number engraved on each Masriera work.
Masriera is the ultimate expression of Catalan Modernist jewelry and one of Europe’s oldest jewelry brands. Lluís Masriera, a member of this lineage, was an exponent of the global artist figure. A cultivator of various arts, with a European vocation and great plastic sensibility and technical quality, he became the benchmark for art jewelry in our country. Its main store is located on the ground floor of Casa Amatller, at number 41 of Passeig de Gràcia, but it also distributes its jewels from New York, Tokyo, and Beijing.
Characteristics of Bagués jewels
The Case contains the book CATALAN JEWELRY AND GOLDSMITHING, 1852-1939, written by Pilar Vélez, and a Bagués ring designed exclusively for Enciclopèdia with the following characteristics:
- A Bagués Solitaire in 18-carat white gold with a 0.05-carat brilliant-cut diamond.
- Or a Bagués Menorca in 18-carat white gold with 26 brilliant-cut diamonds weighing a total of 0.15 carats.
The Bagués firm has become the symbol of high-end Catalan jewelry. Founded a hundred years ago by Josep Bagués i Bagués, and located since 1950 on the ground floor of Casa Amatller. Since 1969, the Bagués family has also owned the Masriera firm, with which they sign their Modernist-inspired jewels. If Masriera represents the classicism of Catalan jewelry, Bagués is synonymous with design and contemporaneity.
