What are the oldest symbols of Catalonia? Since when has Saint George been our patron saint? Why did Francesc Macià emulate the figure of Pau Claris?

All these questions are answered in Symbols of Catalanism, the book that compiles, for the first time, the history of our most important symbols, from Wilfred the Hairy to the yellow ribbon.

Symbols of Catalanism investigates the origin, evolution, and relevance of fifty Catalanist symbols and analyzes the social and political causes that generated them, with articles by the most prestigious Catalan historians: Josep Maria Salrach, Agustí Alcoberro, Josep Pich, David Martínez Fiol, Jordi Cassassas, Giovanni Cattini, Joan B. Culla, and Daniel Venteo.

The book also features an extraordinary introduction by anthropologist and Honor Award of Catalan Letters recipient Joan F. Mira and is profusely illustrated with over seven hundred and fifty images, some completely unpublished.

In addition to those mentioned, Symbols of Catalanism studies, among others, important symbols such as the Senyera, the Canigó, the Montserrat monastery, El cant dels ocells, the Fossar de les Moreres, Rafael Casanova, the Sardana, the Estelada, Pau Casals, L’estaca, and October 1st.

Symbols, fundamental elements in the formation of the identity of all human societies, have originated throughout our history, both in contexts of stability and, above all, of persecution and political and cultural repression.
