Antoni Gaudí
Gaudí [vs.] design
Presentation
Following the series dedicated to great Catalan artists —Picasso, Dalí, Brossa, Miró, and Tàpies— Grup Enciclopèdia presents an original and rigorous monograph on our most universal artist, Antoni Gaudí. Written by Juan José Lahuerta, director of the Gaudí Chair and professor at the Escola Tècnica Superior de Barcelona, it offers a fresh perspective on the Catalan architect, and, more specifically, on his way of conceiving and executing the creative and design process for his furniture, ceramics, metals, stained glass, textiles, ephemeral decorations… This is surely the least studied part by the immense bibliography already published on Gaudí.
If Gaudí’s buildings are easily recognizable, so are the dozens of
pieces he designed in collaboration with his team: the balconies of Casa Milà, the ‘trencadís’ of Park Güell, the tiles of Casa Vicens, the furniture of Casa Calvet, the doorknobs of Casa Batlló, the liturgical furniture of Palma Cathedral… The list is extensive and full of objects as wonderful and captivating as the buildings that house them.
That Gaudí, an architect of modernity, was fully connected with the art of his time, is amply documented in this book, which explores and enumerates his various influences. The author also rigorously analyzes Gaudí’s method of creation and work: the importance of the workshop and the team, the conception of the work as an open process, and the use of certain mechanisms that recur throughout his career and define him.
This edition is accompanied by a facsimile of the first book published in homage to Gaudí, in the year of his death: Antoni Gaudí. 1852-1926. His life. His works. His death. .
