Biography
A philosopher, writer, and university professor, Xavier Antich (La Seu d’Urgell, 1962) holds a PhD in Philosophy and serves as a professor of Aesthetic Ideas at the University of Girona. In the academic field, he has taught courses and postgraduate programs at institutions such as Stanford University and the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Lisbon), and has been a professor in doctoral programs associated with Stanford University, the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Barcelona, and the Blanquerna Faculty of Communication Sciences (URL).
His research focuses on contemporary aesthetics and art, with particular attention to theories developed after 1967 and artistic practices of recent decades; some of his work has also been oriented towards questions of musical aesthetics. In the field of art education and criticism, he has directed the Master’s in Communication and Criticism and has been director of the MACBA Independent Studies Program.
As an author, he has published philosophical essays and texts on art theory; his notable books include The Face of the Other. A Philosophical Walk Through the Work of Emmanuel Lévinas (Joan Fuster Essay Prize, 1992), as well as subsequent volumes and collections such as The City of Dissent. Common Space and Plurality (CCCB, 2013) and The Will to Understand (Arcàdia, 2016). In dialogue with contemporary art, he has also worked on photography — with Revelations / Two Essays on Photography(2019), co-written with Joan Fontcuberta — and has edited texts by Antoni Tàpies, such as In Black and White. Essays 1955–2003 .
