Presentation

This volume from the Catalan Posters collection is dedicated to entertainment, mainly theatre and opera. It gathers a representative sample of posters published from the last decade of the 19th century to the first decade of the 21st century. The selection begins with a poster for the Circo Ecuestre, created in 1890, and concludes with one by Jaume Plensa, for the Institut del Teatre, produced in 2013.

Most are preserved at the Centre de Documentació i Museu de les Arts Escèniques de l’Institut del Teatre de Barcelona (MAE). The selection is complemented by posters preserved in other institutions, such as the Biblioteca de Catalunya, the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona, the Arxiu de la Societat del Liceu, and the Centre de Documentació de l’Orfeó Català, among other institutions.

Posters go beyond announcing events. They are the testimonial expression of different eras, both from an artistic and social point of view. Some posters are part of our historical memory; others have lost their communicative potential, and a few have gained strength over time.

More than a century of posters reveals their importance as a propaganda tool. From a visual perspective, they demonstrate graphic and aesthetic evolution, tastes, and fashions; and from a formal perspective, they are a compilation of the culture consumed in Catalonia.
