Catalan Painting. Second Avant-gardes is part of the series of major works that Enciclopèdia dedicates to the main movements of Catalan pictorial art, on this occasion, to the second avant-gardes.

Directed by Dr. Àlex Mitrani, curator of modern and contemporary art at the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the book contains texts by 32 of the leading specialists in this period of our art history and, in addition to updating knowledge about the best-known painters, it also champions other equally innovative artists, such as Joan Brotat, Mari Chordà, Àngel Jové or Zush, among others.

In the period from 1940 to 1975, the second avant-gardes represented the realization of the avant-garde, just before postmodernity and the collapse of grand ideals. Among the artists who participated in this adventure are great masters involved in the first avant-gardes, such as Miró, Dalí or Clavé, but also the new Tàpies, Ponç, Cuixart, Guinovart, Ràfols Casamada or Hernández Pijuan, consecrated during these years.

The general introduction and specific comments on the one hundred and fifty works allow us to know, understand, appreciate, and enjoy one of the most brilliant periods of Catalan art.

  • A compendium of 150 of the most representative works of the second Catalan avant-gardes, featuring some of its most universal artists.
  • Miró, Dalí, Tàpies, Guinovart… and up to 83 artists less known to the general public, including female painters such as Esther Boix, Mari Chordà, Claude Collet and Sílvia Gubern.
  • Alongside some masterpieces of Catalan art, we find others that are much less publicly disseminated.
  • All works reproduced in large format with excellent quality and fidelity.
