Artur Ramon i Navarro
Art historian
Biography
| Artur Ramon i Navarro belongs to the fourth generation of a Catalan lineage of antique dealers bearing the same name. He holds a degree in art history from the University of Barcelona and was a disciple of José Milicua, from whom he assimilated the culture of the connoisseur and the philological tradition linked to Roberto Longhi. He also trained in Italy and London, at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art, where, alongside John Wilton-Ely, he delved into the work of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, an artist he has studied extensively.
As a result of this research, he has curated several exhibitions dedicated to Piranesi, both at his gallery and in the itinerant exhibition «The Piranesis of Montserrat», accompanied by its corresponding catalogue. Specializing in printmaking, drawing, and ancient Spanish and Italian painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, he has organized numerous exhibitions on these disciplines, many with illustrated catalogues, among which «Raíz del arte», «Obres singulars», «L’Edat d’Or de la pintura catalana», and «Analogies» stand out. Together with his father, Artur Ramon i Picas, he has curated exhibitions dedicated to Manolo Hugué, and is co-author of the Manolo Hugué Album. He has reflected on the profession of antique dealer and collecting in the book Ofici d’antiquari and in numerous conferences, as well as in various articles written with art historian Clara Beltrán Catalán, some of which analyze the history and evolution of the antique trade in Barcelona and the role of patronage. Since 1989, he has regularly collaborated with specialized magazines and newspapers, and participates in radio and television programs dedicated to the dissemination of art. |
