Gems of Catalan Romanesque
Presentation
Gems of Catalan Romanesque aims to offer the reader a glimpse into the great variety and richness of the art most closely tied to the origins of Catalan nationhood.
This essential work, a successor to the magnificent Catalunya romànica, endeavors to present Romanesque art with a more careful selection and methodology.
Its originality lies in the presentation, distribution, and selection of written and graphic information: it represents an updated synthesis of a universal art that culturally identifies us worldwide.
The inventoried Romanesque architectural heritage includes over three thousand units, comprising churches and civil Romanesque buildings (castles, fortified houses, bridges, mills, roads, stone crosses, etc.), two-thirds of which are religious edifices, ranging from cathedrals to simple hermitages.
Romanesque art has always been the best calling card for our culture to the world, and therefore, it cannot go unnoticed by us. For Catalans, Romanesque art is the art that is intrinsically linked to the moment of our recognition as a people and an independent state.
