Catalan Posters. From Modernism to the 1929 International Exposition
Presentation
This work contains a selection of the 200 most representative posters of Catalan poster art between two exhibitions: that of 1888 and that of 1929. The posters come from the Jordi Carulla Collection, the leading collector of posters in Catalonia, who contributes a foreword. The introduction to the volume is by the brilliant art critic Daniel Giralt-Miracle.
Towards the end of the 19th century and the very beginning of the 20th, in an era when the Industrial Revolution was consolidating and a dizzying dynamic of scientific and cultural advancements was taking place, the poster emerged as an advertising tool to bring new industrial products to a mass public.
It was the birth of the commercial world.
The phenomenon of poster art—characteristic of the Western world—achieved such renown in Catalonia that it became known as Catalan poster art.
Artists such as Riquer, Casas, Utrillo, Triadó, Opisso, Rusiñol, Adrià Gual, Amat, Galí, and Obiols, among others, fused their art into this new medium, the poster, transforming it from merely an advertising tool into a form of artistic expression that reveals its importance within the Modernist movement.
At the end of the book, there is a chronology of the main historical, scientific, cultural, and artistic events from 1888 to 1929, aiming to contextualize the posters within an explosively dynamic world.
Additionally, it includes an alphabetical index of artists and one of the graphic arts workshops where the lithographs were produced.
The 200 posters are organized into 11 themes, each presented with a brief introductory note also written by Giralt-Miracle.
